Milestone Birthdays can be great fun. One idea to celebrate a milestone is a roast. One of my favorite themes for a birthday roast is a memorial.
The first thing I want to do is send out invitations to birthday formatted like an obituary. A picture of white cheese and black a younger version of the late adds a touch of legitimacy to the document. If you or one of your cronies have a flair for creative writing can be a very warm and funny tribute, as well as souvenir for all participants.
The path for the roast or memorial should be as simple as possible and decorated as such. Be sure to welcome guests in your with your most solemn and sober demeanor.

Another idea is to use cap guns for a salvo of 21 guns. This could be used if the honoree met his end in some form of "heroism". Friends and family of people could be forged from his fictional biography.
Also be sure to distribute black armbands at the door if people did not have enough foresight to bring them. Black crepe paper is a good inexpensive way to provide these. Black party hats with veils made of black tights or some other translucent material can also be made.
A milestone birthday roast disguised as a memorial can and should be great fun. You'll enjoy planning and production, and if done well, will be a birthday party that people will talk about for years to come.
